On World Suicide Prevention Day 2012 Grassroots Suicide Prevention publicly launched our intention to work with city partners towards Brighton & Hove becoming a ‘Suicide Safer Community’, an international designation awarded by LivingWorks Education in Canada.
The Suicide-Safer Communities designation recognises communities that have implemented concerted, strategic approaches to suicide prevention. The nine pillars in this designation reflect the core elements of suicide prevention strategies around the world.
Pillars for Building a Suicide-Safer Community
The nine pillars provide a structure for reviewing actions and accomplishments in achieving a suicide-safer community designation:
- Leadership/Steering Committee
- Background Summary
- Suicide Prevention Awareness
- Mental Health and Wellness Promotion
- Suicide Intervention & Ongoing Clinical/Support Services
- Suicide Bereavement Support
- Evaluation Measures
- Capacity Building/Sustainability
LivingWorks says that ‘In acquiring an official “Suicide-Safer Community” designation, communities will be recognized for their efforts as leaders in formulating and implementing suicide prevention initiatives on a sustainable and ongoing basis over time. Those that seek and prepare for designation engage in an opportunity to identify their community strengths and opportunities for improvement in the area of suicide prevention.’
Grassroots is now in the process of co-ordinating an Application with and on behalf of Brighton & Hove City’s Suicide Prevention Strategy Group, along with other relevant organisations and providers in the City. The application will be assessed by a review committee comprised of LivingWorks representatives and suicide prevention experts in England.
