Grassroots people #9 – Nick

We are a small team at Grassroots and we wanted to share with you the people and personalities behind the roles and share with you what the best things are about working for Grassroots and a few other choice questions. Next up in our series of team blogs is our wonderfully talented and knowledgeable trainer, Nick.

Name:
Nick Brown

Role at Grassroots:
I am an Associate Suicide Prevention & Mental Health Trainer for Grassroots and have been since 2007. I am also a huge fan and follower of the fantastic work that Grassroots do locally and nationally which literally saves lives.

Best thing about being a suicide prevention trainer?
The best thing about being a Suicide Prevention Trainer is that I get to witness how my participants develop their knowledge, skills and confidence over the 2 days of the ASIST course to be able to have a life saving conversation with someone who is having thoughts of suicide. For some participants coming on the course it is a life changing experience (it was for me) and I am proud of my part in bringing about that hugely positive outcome.

Which course gives you most enjoyment?
I think I may have already answered this question. The most enjoyable course and the one I am most proud of is ASIST for the reasons stated above. It also teaches people a life skill which is very satisfying.

What I will take and keep from lockdown?
I will take from lockdown and keep the experience of having brilliant quality time with my wife daughter and son. We laughed we cried, we were very silly and we resolved our conflicts very positively.

What I will gladly leave in lockdown?
I will gladly leave in lockdown the fear I had of those people who I love and cherish catching the virus and dying. This is a wish rather than a reality because Co vid is still with us sadly.

How do you relax?
I relax by going walking on the seafront, watching movies and by sharing a beer or two with my best mate.

Favourite sandwich filling?
Albercore Tuna and mayo with red onion and rocket in Seeded wholemeal bread.
