Language guide

Talking and writing about suicide can be difficult, please read this basic guidance on how to write content for social media.

The language below helps to protect vulnerable people from reading things which may be triggering as well as contributing to a wider change in the language we use around suicide. 

Yes please  ✓

Use the phrases ‘had/experienced suicidal thoughts’ or ‘died by suicide’

Understand that suicide has many causes and factors which are unique to each person

Understand that suicide should not be framed as a ‘problem’ or ‘illness’ 

Understand that suicidal thoughts are not permanent and can go away

No thank you  ✗

Do not say that a person ‘committed’, ‘completed’ or was ‘successful in’ suicide

Do not suggest that suicide is ‘selfish’ 

Do not suggest that suicide has one cause or can be ‘cured’ or ‘solved’

Do not suggest that suicidal thoughts are permanent or bad
