Hello. My name is Jack!

Hello. My name is Jack!

I just started an exciting new role at Grassroots, as a Community ChangeMaker.

The first thing I want to do is introduce myself to you!

I hope to be connecting with you soon as I’m going to be out in the community sharing ways that we can work together to start conversations that save lives.

Suicide is an issue that effects everyone.

1 in 5 people have suicidal thoughts at some time in their lifetime and suicide is the biggest killer of men under 50 in the UK. Suicide affects us all and the ripples of a person’s death can be felt for years, forever.

The loss. The questions. The empty space left can feel unfathomable.

We believe that Real Talk, real open and courageous conversation about suicide can save lives. Not only that but talking helps recovery and healing. If only we knew what to say.. right? And that’s where Real Talk comes in.

I know this because I struggled for years myself. The deaths, by suicide of some of my closest friends and the ways that I coped with this affected me deeply.

I never really knew what to say.  Never really knew how to say it- or even how to go there.  I worried that I would make it worse. But Real Talk has shown me that any conversation that comes from the right place is helpful. Being open and brave can open up a conversation that can be lifesaving.

It might be as small as asking are you ok? Asking a mate for a cup of coffee and learning how to really listen. Find out why that regular face at the pub hasn’t been around much. Learn how to notice when a mate might be struggling but not able to ask for help.

Grassroots want to take away the fear of and get people talking. To help start as many conversations as possible because we believe we can all make a difference.  That’s why we are building a community of Changemakers who are willing to join us and make real change in our community.

We realise that talking about suicide might feel daunting. But we believe that we can all learn the skills and confidence to do it. I have and you can too.

So, if you want to get involved in Real Talk and find out more about Changemakers what better place to start than telling me your name.

Please get in touch – I’m looking forward to hearing from you.
